Mix Praises/Concerns

Whitney | August 26th, 2009

Towards the end of last semester, Representatives from the Office of Information and Technology (OIT) came to Student Government to discuss changes to the MIX System. The changes occured over the last two weeks and since then, we’ve heard a “MIXed” array of praises and complaints.

Here is your chance. SGA would like to hear your praises and concerns for the new MIX system. Particularly if you’ve had MIX before, we’d like to hear what you think of it.

I was really excited for the MIX upgrade. I still find that it logs me out and the only good part from that is it lets you type your password in and doesn’t make you lose your work. Also, a lot of times it says loading and nothing ever appears.

It was a good idea. But, it has yet to impress.

I have had problems with the above issues, but I have also had problems with MIX failing to deliver e-mails in a timely manner. I will receive e-mails that were sent days earlier, and some people told me that they sent me e-mails that I never received.

Also, sometimes the portal will not load. I then have to close it, log out, log back in, and try again.

The new MIX, while it sounded great, has been anything but an upgrade. It takes longer to load, may not send e-mails, and logs me off every time I try to perform an action. Go back to the old MIX- it wasn’t great, but it was much better than this “better” version.

The MIX upgrade had not helped at all. It times out more often than the other MIX. Also when it does time out when I log back in it does does not completely load, or stops in the process of loading then I must completely log out and long back in. I do not feel that this upgrade to MIX was really an upgrade.

i dont mind the new format at all, but when i try to log in it keeps making me re-enter my password. then it just wont load. boooo new mix…. HORRAYY BEER.

I’ve had MIX since my Junior year of high school and am now a Freshman at WVU. I definitely see a lot of improvements with MIX, it occasionally logs out when I delete old mail. It might be easier if we could have check boxes to select the mail we want to delete and delete it all in one move. Nevertheless, I think MIX is much easier to use now.

7 Bob Haring-Smith | Sep 9 at 10:31 am

If you want to delete multiple messages simultaneously, you can use Shift-Click and Ctrl-Click (in Windows) or Command-Click (on a Mac) to select all the messages, before clicking on Delete to remove them all.

8 Kevin B. | Aug 27 at 1:28 pm

There will always be kinks to work out with a brand new or innovative system. I think that the selection and deletion portion is not user friendly. You don’t have the option anymore to delete all or check certain emails. If you do, then I just haven’t figured it out yet. Secondly, as many have said, it logs you out constantly. The way we review the emails under the main checking inbox is a great addition in my opinion.

9 Sarah | Aug 27 at 1:34 pm

i didn’t think MIX could be any worse, until the new one came out. Now instead of timing out when im writing an email, it times out when I try to delete and send them too. Fantastic!

Forgot to mention that you can JUST access your email. You know how mix.wvu.edu was just email and www.mix.wvu.edu was all that other stuff and you had to click on the email. I think that was the biggest upset when you have to go through two individual server windows to get to you email. The other way was faster and more effective for somone who has to check emails all day long.

11 Mark S. | Sep 10 at 10:45 am

Kevin, try this url. It will take you directly to the mail server.

12 RKC | Aug 27 at 1:42 pm

The e-mail system is far too slow to access conveniently.

13 Courtney | Aug 27 at 6:12 pm

While the old Mix was never anything fantastic, it got the job done with little problems. With the “upgrade” I am constantly getting logged off, and it sometimes will not log me back on. It seems to take longer to get emails, which is a big problem when I am trying to meet a deadline for a story I have to write for a journalism class. Also, I just do not like how it looks. I want separate windows to view a message and my inbox; I don’t like how they are crammed into one right now.

14 Paul K | Aug 28 at 3:31 pm

it has issues that I hope the OIT office will look at. i think the main problem is the compatability of the internet browsers people are using when accessing the new MIX. hopefully the University will be able to fix the problems that MIX appears to have with internet explorer. i’m sure all the kinks will be worked out eventually.

15 EJ | Sep 1 at 5:54 pm

The layout of the new mix is nice, and that is where the good ends. It takes a very long time to load up mix, and an even longer time to get your email to load up in the screen. Also it for no reason logs out while you are checking email and makes you retype your password. A fix to the mix would be appreciated.

16 CWL | Sep 1 at 6:28 pm

Mix email takes way too long to open. I cannot conveniently and quickly check my email anymore. It has become a hassle. There is also no way to delete several emails at once (after checking boxes next to selected emails). I am frequently asked to retype my password in on occasion. The whole process of checking email is now uncommonly slow. This needs to be fixed ASAP.

The previous iteration of MIX was the very same that the US Army used for it’s Army Knowledge Online mail service since 2001. That’s right, an 8 year-old (at LEAST) web mail client. In a university that can afford to pay these relatively huge salaries to its executives, is that the best we could do? Of course not.

So we moved on to this current iteration. Not that we the students had any choice in the matter, AS USUAL. And it’s every bit as unreliable as the previous MIX. As is the PRT. As are the MountainLine buses. As is the electrical and water utilities in WVU downtown campus buildings during poor weather. Noticing a trend here?

My chief complaint with both iterations of MIX is that I cannot access my MIX email through MS Outlook, Apple’s Mail client, or a similar other third-party mail client. THIS would alleviate the complaints about MIX’s poor (past and present both) interface, and likely reduce the frequency of the time-outs that continue to plague MIX to this day.

As for the argument of unsupported browsers, that’s a laugh. Internet Explorer 8 has been out for the better part of a year, and it’s not supported. Apple’s Safari, Mozilla’s FireFox, and Google’s Chrome are all used to varying but significant extents by WVU students, yet none are supported in any version. It follows, of course, that mobile device browsers are categorically incompatible with MIX as well, and likely will remain so for good- my iPhone actually worked a LOT better with the old MIX email.

How ‘bout the SGA bring the OIT to the table and get talking with the VAST, OVERWHELMING majority of the WVU community members- the STUDENTS. Get us something that is actually a CREDIT to this university.

Here is a link on how to setup outlook, or your favorite email client, to interface with MIX email.

I was under the impression that the upgrade would change the look and function of mix, making it easier to navigate. It’s the same mix, just with a more complex email system that doesn’t work all that much better. It is nice to have more mailbox space, but in all honesty I preferred the old mix email better.

20 Eddy V | Sep 3 at 10:01 am

Another problem- e-mail attachments (both sending them and downloading them) is EXTREMELY problematic

21 Sam | Sep 8 at 5:39 pm

If you are using IE 8, it is not supported…so it won’t work with attachments. It makes sense…most stuff can’t be tested against a new browser until after the fact. I use Firefox..works excellently with MIX.

22 rush | Sep 7 at 11:40 pm

new email make us look us bad since it’s prove that we are behind in “IT” services. it’s like stone age.
when u ask them, they said its because our computer is messed up.

i think we should demand them to change email services to gmail or something like that!

23 Abby | Sep 8 at 5:46 pm

I disagree. This e-mail is so much better and I tested it against the loading time for my gmail..it is not faster.

24 Pete D | Sep 8 at 7:34 pm

My thoughts are that we should have gone with Google Apps for Education. The number of schools using the program since last year has increased 400% and is still going strong. Maybe we should start to look outside the box of what we currently have.

A link on the MIX login page will take you to a list of supported browsers, which does include Safari 3.1 and FireFox 2 and 3 on both Windows and Mac.

26 Carrie | Sep 9 at 10:46 am

I thought with the new mix upgrade things would be so much better but their not. Mix logged me out “session timed out” 5 times while just trying to check my email. Yes its nice that all we have to do is reenter our new password but five times? As soon as I log in, it pops up saying “session timed out”. There have been times when I havent received emails, You cant just glance at your emails to delete the ones you DONT want to read. It automatically opens the email for you in order for you to delete it. This mix has a lot more problems then the old one!

27 Carrie | Sep 9 at 10:50 am

One more problem: I cant attached ANYTHING. And cant download attachments that are sent to me IF I even receive the email!

28 Nikki | Sep 9 at 2:07 pm

I’m not quite sure why everyone is having so many problems with the new MIX. I have had none of these problems and am enjoying the upgrades. It’s not as amazing as gmail, but it’s way better than the old set up! You can’t please everyone, but this student is happy with the changes. The only way to make things better is to change them, so keep up the good work! Thanks!

29 Grace | Sep 9 at 10:10 pm

I have a gmail account and this e-mail has many features I don’t have in gmail. I don’t have any trouble with attachments. What browser are you using? I bet you are using IE 8. I like Firefox myself…a really awesome browser. They gave us a much bigger mailbox and now I can send photos to my friends with the bigger attachment limit.

30 Anna | Sep 9 at 5:18 pm

I’m a little frustrated that I can no longer forward my email to my gmail, which I much prefer over the MIX system. I echo most of the complaints, and an additional complaint is that I am unable to see which emails are new and which are read before entering the entire system which is start of most of the problems. Some highlighting on the MIX home page would be nice.

31 Maddy | Sep 9 at 5:50 pm

I like the new MIX so much better. Finally, my e-mail is in chronological order. And you people who can’t delete..have you not discovered holding down the shift key and clicking? I really like this so much better.

32 Char M | Sep 9 at 9:16 pm

Of course my biggest complaint is how slow MIX is, which is extremely annoying. The old MIX used to log me out all the time when writing emails so I searched around and found out about Central IDs, which was AMAZING, I never had to log into MIX for anything. I downloaded all the messages to Thunderbird and sent all my messages from Thunderbird.
I think I read somewhere they were getting rid of it, but have been unable to find a reference to that anywhere. Sometimes I can send mail from Thunderbird, other times I can’t. I don’t like being forced to have to sign into mix to send my mail, so I started using gmail instead, it is far superior in that aspect.
I don’t like the new layout with all the functions and everything, all I want to be able to do is check my mail and send it and be on with my day. I think you need to bring back the www.mix.wvu.edu for just checking mail.
One last comment, what about the linux users? The engineering campus has entire labs that only run ubuntu, maybe this should be considered under the supported browsers area. Just saying.

33 Mark S. | Sep 10 at 3:51 pm

When is comes to supported browsers WVU does not set them. We have to go with what the software vendor tells us. If we discover a problem with a browser or OS that is not supported by the vendor they will not help us.

This being said we tested MIX on Ubuntu with Firefox 3.5 and it works great.

34 Brad | Sep 9 at 10:01 pm

I’m sure any praise is from WVU representatives. I think this whole upgrade has been actually been a downgrade in order to save the university money.

35 Frederick | Sep 9 at 10:43 pm

I think the new version of MIX is very user friendly. My only real issue so far is the inability to add attachments to email. Overall, I am a big fan of the improvements to the calendar and contacts. Thanks!

36 Laura | Sep 9 at 11:25 pm

The old mix e-mail was much better than what it is now. I know myself, and every single one of my friends are fed up with getting timed out every 2 minutes. One time I was going through my mail and it timed me out 4 times within 10 minutes. It also takes much longer to load than the old version. I know it’s not just a problem with my computer because I’ve used it on many other computers and continue to have the same problems.

37 Tracy | Sep 10 at 11:53 am

I never had any problems with the old Mix. With the new Mix, most times that I log in, it times out before it even finishes loading from my first log in.

38 Harry D. | Sep 10 at 5:50 pm

MIX mail is loading so fast today. I think the tweaking is coming along. That attachment thing is a problem with IE 8. My browser of choice-Firefox.

39 Jaimie | Sep 10 at 6:28 pm

As most of the comments I have read, I didn’t have any problems with the old MIX as well. The new one freezes up my computer almost every time that I sign on and it takes forever to load the e-mails. I also have the problem that before I get to read my e-mails, it says I must log in again.
