Frequently Asked Questions

How do I become a member of the Student Government Association?
Every spring semester, a campus wide election is held to determine the members of the Board of Governors, our legislative branch, the President and Vice President, and the member of the Athletic Council. The election process actually begins in January when students who are interested pick-up an election packet. In February, the elections are held. SGA also consists of several appointed positions including the Attorney General, Treasurer, Secratary, Off-Campus Housing Director, Public Relations Chair, Elections Chair, and the Executive Director of the Mountaineer Maniacs. These appointees go through an application and interview process to determine the officers.

What are the functions of the Board of Governors?
The members of the Board of Governors serve as the legislative branch of the Student Government Association. These elected students represent the entire student body by voicing their concerns. They also enact resolutions throughout the year, which serve as the student’s goals and projects for their term. If you have a concern that you would like to voice, please call 293-4403, e-mail SGA@mail.wvu.edu, or contact the person whose committee would address your concern.

How can I contact members?
The Student Government Association has four offices in the Student Organizations Wing of the Mountainlair. These offices are labeled according to which officers resign there. Every officer also holds weekly office hours. These office hours should be posted outside on the doors of each office. Members also have a mailbox with their name on it located in the student Board of Governors office. If you cannot personally visit us, SGA has several phone numbers for our members. The phone numbers are listed below:

What programs does SGA support?
SGA has created and/or supported FallFest, SpringFest, WVUp All Night, Mountaineer Maniacs, Safety Week, and the new Student Recreation Center to name a few.

What does SGA do for me, the student?
SGA serves as the students direct voice to the WVU administration. We meet several times a year with President Garrison to voice the opinions of the student body to him. SGA encourages students to inform us of your concerns so that we can better serve you.
