WVU SGA Takes Part in Welcome Week Activities

Morgantown, WV - The West Virginia University Student Government Association helped to greet freshmen on campus last week by hosting Welcome Week activities.

“It is important that we, as students elected to office, maintain a vibrant relationship with the rest of the student body because this is ultimately the best way for us to keep our finger on the pulse of student issues and passions,” said Miguel Henriquez, SGA senator.

SGA members were able direct freshmen to class and welcome them to campus on Wednesday, August 16 with the SGA SOS event hosted in front of the Mountainlair.

“As representatives of the student body, it's only our duty to be there for students and help them get through their days,” said said Adila Fathallah, SGA Chief of Staff. “SGA SOS was a remarkable success. There's nothing we love more than meeting new Mountaineers and putting a smile on their face. We hope to do more of this soon.”

After most of the first day festivities had died down, SGA hosted SGA on the Green in conjunction with the Student Events Board Wednesday evening.

“Events like SGA On the Green allow for one-on-one interactions with students who take interest in what their representation is working on,” Henriquez said. “I enjoyed playing corn hole and talking to new students about SGA and the issues WVU faces.”

Students were invited to play cornhole, Jenga, pass frisbee, socialize with SGA members and have a flying WV cookie or two.

“There's nothing like the first week here at WVU. everyone is so full of energy and enthusiasm for the new year— as are we,” Fathallah said. “Meeting new people, from new students to those who have been here for years, rejuvenates us all and gets us excited to work with everyone.”

SGA also hosted bubble soccer with WVUp All Night in the Student Recreation Center on Friday, August 18.

"By having genuine and thoughtful conversations with students in an informal atmosphere, it shows that we are still approachable, normal students who just want to serve the student body at large and have a little fun in the process,” Henriquez said.

WVU SGA will have its first meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 23 in Hatfield’s B in the Mountainlair. All students are welcome to attend.
