Logan Riffey
Position: Legislative Affairs Officer
A summary of work completed in March: From start to finish, the West Virginia Legislature has been tearing apart the month of March. Primarily, I have been monitoring both the West Virginia Senate and House of Delegates. On several occasions, I assisted in the writing of legislation to support or oppose certain bills in the West Virginia Legislature. These include AP-2021-01, an assembly proclamation in support of the CROWN Act, AP-2021-02, an assembly proclamation opposing bills to limit the rights of young transgender athletes in the state, and AP-2021-05, and assembly proclamation in opposition to the proposed budget bills in both houses as well as the House bill to reduce the state personal income tax. Other actions I have taken as an official within student government have been writing a letter to the Legislature in opposition to campus carry measures and an email to the Senate Judiciary Committee to reaffirm SGA’s support of the CROWN Act. Aside from the Legislature, I spearheaded an effort to table in front of the Mountainlair for several days to promote voter registration ahead of the Morgantown Municipal Election (April 27).
A summary of plans for April: In the month of April, I will continue to monitor the West Virginia Legislature as they enter their final week of the session. I hope to promote the local election and perhaps coordinate efforts for that to continue with the incoming administration, as the changing of the seats will occur just before.
