AN ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION URGING THE UNIVERSITY TO PRIORITIZE AFFORDABLE PARKING ON CAMPUS

Whereas, the West Virginia University Student GovernmentAssociation Constitution states our desire to “ensure the personal freedoms and general welfare of the students within our University” 1; and,

Whereas, many students, faculty, and staff commute to campus for class, work, and other activities; and,

Whereas, only 24% of undergraduate students live on-campus; and, 2

Whereas, parking prices range from $1.25 to $1.50 per hour for short-term parking lots on the downtown campus; and, 3

Whereas, parking prices range from $0.50 to $1.25 per hour for short-term parking lots on the Evansdale campus; and, 4

Whereas, parking prices for the Mountaineer Station garage, designated as the sole short-term parking lot for the Health Sciences Campus, are set at $1.50 per hour; and, 5

Whereas, limited student parking permits are available at costs ranging from $252 to $858 per year; and,6 Whereas, employee parking permits are available at costs ranging from $252 to $900 per year; and, 7

Whereas, prior to this summer the Coliseum Parking lot served as one of the only free parking areas for students, faculty, and staff around campus; and,

Whereas, commuter students and students that live off-campus must either purchase a parking permit or pay to park in a short-term lot; and, Whereas, tuition has increased for students four out of the last five years; and, 8

Whereas, tuition will likely continue to increase for students in the coming years; and, 9

Whereas, with the expensive nature of parking on campus coupled with overall increases in cost of tuition, cost of living, and everyday essentials, the economic burden of a Mountaineer education is steadily climbing ; and,

Therefore, be it resolved by the Student Assembly of West Virginia University:

Section 1: The West Virginia Student Government Association urges WVU to explore actions which can be taken to make parking more affordable for students.

Section 2: The West Virginia Student Government Association urges WVU to prioritize making parking more affordable on campus for students.

Section 3: Upon passage and approval, this legislation shall be forwarded to:
